Artist's Comments

Portrait of :iconchocolatemuack: photo [link]

Used 2H, 3B 6B and 9B pencils on A3 paper. The quality isn't great becuase i don't have an A3 scanner :(

Re-submitted thanks to AinuLaire for youre advice :)
I've changed everything that AinuLaire said would help apart from the left eye because it was drawn fairly hard and i think it would be too stubborn to erase correctly.
But i think its looks much better now so i'll lleave it as it is!

Any comments welcome, hope you like it! :)

[EDIT] Resubmitted this again so should be a better quality image now! :D

Critiques

:iconainulaire:
The fact that you have the reference picture along with the deviation made this easier for me to critique, since I know what the original model looked like.

Compared to the original, the chin is too long, the face is too wide, the eye on the left (her right) is too large and should be slightly higher (especially seeing how the photo of the original was taken), and the necklace is crooked, which makes her neck look odd. You have some texture in the hair, which is good, but it can be much more textured.

Your main issue, however, is the shading. You can go much darker on the shading. I know the photo washes out some of the darks, but nonetheless there should be much more evidence of shadow on her face and her hair (especially the hair, seeing how it is almost black in the photo). If you go darker with the shading, the lights will stand out more, and make it look more life-like.

You have potential (I was about where you are at 16, which was only a couple years ago for me). Keep on drawing as you are, look at what other artists do, and you'll be suprised to see how far you go. And find a scanner ;) Good luck!

you must teach me how to do faces ^^
:iconglaudarien:
Well i assure you i'm not the best :)
But i find it helps alot when you use reference and keep checking the proportions (i've recently been taught that using a mirror can show all the flaws ;))

I really like it. Only thing I would say is the top of the head is slightly sunken in but the ref. is missing the top of the head anyway. Look at you, instantly showing improvement.

Oh crap yeah haha i just noticed that haha. Just changed loads of this last night to make it look better so ill leave it as it is for now ;)
Thanks! :D This one seemed to be the most challenging, i'm not sure why :|

Maybe It's the anxiety from knowing the person you are drawing will see the final. I think if you take the same steps you did with Hugh Laurie sketch, you shouldn't have much of an issue.
:iconglaudarien:
Hmm yes true. I'm fairly happy with how it turned out in the end though. Time to start a new sketch now, just been out to Chepstow Castle taking photo's.
And thanks for the fave :)

I had to grab that one, even though it is slightly off, it is an amazing difference from your early sketch work. Already you are starting to look as good at drawing as you do photography. Now if you ask the question you will get mixed answers. I looked at the updated version of this image, it is safe to say it's done now. Moving on.
